Flavio Shiró

Flavio Shiró (Sapporo, Japan 1928)

Flavio Shiró is a painter, engraver, designer and set designer. He arrived in Brazil in 1932 and settles with his family in a Japanese colony in Tomé-Açu, Pará. He takes up residence in São Paulo from 1940. He studies at the Getúlio Vargas Professional School, where he meets Octávio Araújo (1926), Marcelo Grassmann (1925) and Luiz Sacilotto (1924–2003). He attends the Santa Helena group around 1943, contacting artists such as Alfredo Volpi (1896–1988) and Francisco Rebolo (1902–1980). In 1947, he joined the Seibi group. The following year, he works at the painting by the painter Tadashi Kaminagai (1899–1982). Severini (1883–1966), metal engraving with Johnny Friedlaender (1912–1992) and lithography at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in addition to attending the Atelier de Sugai and Tabuchi. In the 1960s, he participated in the Brazilian artistic movement and was part of the Austral group (Movimento Phases), from São Paulo.

Dedicated himself to informal abstraction since the 1950s. From the 1970s onwards, his canvases pass to present suggestions for figures, sometimes fantastic or monstrous beings. In 1990, the book Flávio-Shiró was published, by Editora Salamandra. The exhibition Trajectory: 50 years of painting by Flavio-Shiró is presented at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ) and at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, in Tokyo, in 1993, and at the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), in 1994.

Critical Comment

After starting his career with figurative works, of an expressionist character, Flávio-Shiro is dedicated to informal abstraction from the 1990s. 1950. Creates works in which the gestures of the brushstroke and the surfaces loaded with matter, frequently employing black and dark or neutral colors, stand out.

In the early 1960s, Shiro lets a possibility of Drawing in frames in which you gradually use light backgrounds, in contrast to dark images. In some canvas, it presents organic forms, approaching figuration, as in Delfica (1963). As noted by art critic Reynaldo Roels Jr., since the 1970s, the central focus of his canvases moves to the figure, even if it is not easily discerned. From then on, the figures, often suggestions of fantastic or monstrous beings, appear with all force in their canvases, in abstract contexts.

Shiro works with the conscious ambiguity between figuration and abstraction. In its paintings, the contained palette, the elaborate textures and the balance between graphics and chromatic stain stand out. For Roels Jr., Shiro is an artist who addresses contradictions inherent in contemporary painting, such as abstraction and representation, and objectivity and subjectivity.

Criticism

"Flavio-S. Tanaka, in symmetry and fugitiveness of his best-acting paintings, demonstrates the same immediacy and connection of ideas and the execution of extreme-eastern art. Black, which in atmospheric paintings we have seen preferably highlighted by the use of whites, is an always vital element: 'Organizado Instinctively the composition with black ink, necessity or preference that perhaps explains by my Japanese origin.' In fact, this color (sometimes combustion) plays a special importance in the fabric of the canvas, a structure that the artist seeks to dissimulate. Painting as Action Painting A long horizontal or a short and vertiginous vector, curves or broken lines are all elements of stability and control in the Dionysian polychromy of the set. 
(...) It belongs to an effervescent generation, of Difficult and even crucial alternatives at this time of the century, called to succeed the splendid flowering of complex and heterogeneous characters of the category of Frautrier and Fontana, by Pollock and Dubuffet".

The painting of this Japanese, transported from its early years to the heart of the Brazilian geographical and ethnic milieu, appears, in effect, profoundly South American, by inspiration, while All orientalism in it is absent. Only, one can point out his taste for the line, the speed of the design and its expressive heat. 
This design was not placed, as in certain Japanese, in the service of a philosophical attitude. Realism marked by a sovereign subjectivity. 
Flavio-Shiró achieves a style that could be qualified as 'non-figurative lyrical realism'. Its vegetation, its fauna and always a human presence aware of its impotence in the face of the phenomena of life, but a vigilant spectator, ready to interpret the suggestive, symbolic and poetic value.

"Flavio-Shiró has half a century of painting. of work, far from the impositions of the market and the media. He is an artist who made his studio a sacred territory, guarding an almost religious atmosphere. This behavior does not mean an alienation from the things of the world, including politics, economics and technology, but without a doubt what prevails, in the Its creator is the humanist vision of Art. A demure humanism, which has nothing pamphleteering or demagogic. 
No work of art, regardless of the particular experience of life it transmits, is born outside the history of art either Isolated and untouched in a platonic sky. "Roots

I am like the figueira brava, connected to three continents by aerial roots: its complementary and contrast saps feed me. 
The roots of Sugui, attached to the flanks of the mountains of my native Japan, go very early to join those of the gigantic samaúma of the Amazon of my childhood.

That's where my memory awoke and that I started to participate in a violent mutation. 
Fascinated, I see up close the world that reveals itself. 
The boa links its prey, crushes it and then swallows it. 
The crab spider jumps over a birds. 
Hordes of scorpions, armed stingers, shake from one side to the other like samurai, in a poisonous crackle. 
Giant frogs swell and distill poisons when are touched. There they are, copulating in the shadow of a palm tree. The guava tree is celebrating with the metamorphosis of butterflies. The intoxicating perfumes of bacuri and cupuaçu are mixed with the smell of fermented cassava. Sun a pin. 
Tremo: Malaria.

The Amazon River runs slow and immense. 
Time runs too. I'm in São Paulo, a city still teenager. 
It was there that my love for painting was born. Sitting on the roof, I paint my first landscape. 
The world is at war. Brazil is an oasis. 
Youth, time of battles. of dreams too: Paris.

A beautiful day I'll meet you there. Standing on the platform of the green bus, amazed, I see the boulevards of plane trees and chestnut trees, kiosks and urinals parade. Street vendors fill the air with their screams. The singer-accordionist plays Musette waiting for the coins to fall from the sky. Suddenly, a strike. Everything stopped. The piles of garbage begin to hide the other side of the street. The crowd parades: demonstrations. In cafes, abstraction is discussed while existentialism dies. The bald singer debuts in a basement.

Wars and Wars. the technological revolution is accelerated. The sky is carried with sophisticated hardware. The sword of Damocles becomes increasingly heavy. 
Live, love, suffer, paint, expose, evolve.

I realize that the roots of my fig tree also infiltrated us. interstices of the marais stones. 
In my garden the sap of spring awakens the wild roses".
